Canadian map

Canada is the largest country in land size in the western hemisphere. It stretches more than 3456 miles from east to west coast, and extends southward from the North Pole to the U.S. border. It's seacoast includes 36,356 miles of mainland and 115,133 miles of islands, including the Arctic islands almost from Greenland to near the Alaskan border.

In the Inuit language of Inuktitut, Nunavut means "Our Land". It is the name given to the ancestral home of the Inuit of the central and eastern Arctic, and the title given to the recently created Territory of Nunavut in Canada's Eastern Arctic which became a reality in April 1999.

In providing title to the Nunavut Inuit of 350,000 square kilometers of land in the eastern Arctic, the agreement establishes clear rules of ownership and control over land and resources in the new Territory of Nunavut, an area of land one-fifth the size of Canada.

The creation of the Territory of Nunavut is a  brand new chapter in Canada's confederation, which came into being on July 1, 1867 with the passage of the British North American Act which recognized Canada as a Dominion and no longer a colony of Great Britain. The last province to join this Dominion was Newfoundland in 1949,  at which point this country consisted of ten provinces and two territories.  With the recognition of this new Territory of Nunavut, in April of 1999,  the Nunavut and the Inuit who make their lives there, and whose story is an ancient one going back over thousands of years of continuous habitation, finally have their rights to the land they have for so long cherished. We now  enter the new millennium as ten provinces and three territories.

The establishment of the Territory of Nunavut and the finalization of the historic land claim settlement, between the Nunavut Inuit and the Government of Canada, adds a new dimension to the evolving history of both Nunavut and Canada.

We still must address the claims of the First Nations, the original native - born Canadians so inaptly named Indians by Christopher Columbus, before we truly live up to our often stated Canadian beliefs. I have no doubt we shall.

Parliament Hill - Ottawa

Canada is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government. It is also a federal state. Canada's official head of state, Queen Elizabeth II, is represented by a resident Governor-General. However, in practice the nation is governed by the Prime Minister, leader of the party that commands the support of a majority of the House of Commons, dominant chamber of Canada's Parliament.

Our country is a multicultural nation made up of peoples from all over the world, living together in harmony, and is known as a humanitarian country and a recognized peace loving nation. The basic tenet which exemplifies many of the shared values of our society, such as equality, fairness, compassion, and respect for the fundamental dignity of all,  leads many looking for a haven to choose Canada as their home.

Canada is a country rich in natural resources and with vast areas still unpopulated,  which allows her to open her arms to the immigrant. The heaviest population concentration  is in Central Canada, but much of her  magnificence  may be found in those unpopulated areas where man has not yet destroyed what nature created.

Since  I first started my Canada page I have become much more knowledgeable about 'load times' and have decided it is best to separate the various parts of the country by giving them their own pages. Because there are so many images now, and will be more in the future, this will hopefully make the load time less onerous for visitors.  If you just follow the link below you can travel with me across this wonderful country of ours from her Eastern Provinces and the Atlantic Coast all the way to the Pacific Ocean and the Western Provinces and Territories.

Being a proud Canadian who dearly loves her country, I hope to incorporate for you to enjoy on these pages, graphic proof of her beauty from coast to coast.  My few pages will hardly do her justice, but will at least give you a glimpse of her  grandeur. And perhaps, encourage you to visit this beautiful land of ours.  I assure you, we will extend a time honoured traditional Canadian welcome.

The small town in which I grew up has a motto on the signposts at the entrances to the town which say, " Where you are a stranger, only once."

If you do decide to pay us a visit you will find that this could well be true of any community in this magnificent country of ours.
