There is nothing
in the world more beautiful than a forest clothed in snow. It is, in my
humble opinion a masterpiece of nature. Every blade of grass, every reed,
every twig, is blanketed with radiance. The first major fall of snow is
a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of a world and wake up in another
completely different, and if that isn't enchantment then just exactly what
would you call it ?
No, I haven't finally
lost my senses. I admit as winter wears on and we have several blizzards
and ice storms the magic does begin to dissipate quite a bit as shoveling
and the hazardous driving conditions become the norm but that first magnificent
snowfall does make me thankful we live in a country which enjoys the luxury
of all four seasons.
I do realize many
in other countries believe we are perpetually clothed in snow and ice but
anyone who does know Canada at all, knows that simply is not the case.
We have a true appreciation for springtime that those who do not have the
beauty and yes, inconvenience of winter, cannot possibly realize in quite
the same way. Our summers can be hot at times but lovely, our autumn is
quite simply magnificent as nature paints the landscape with a profusion
of glorious colour as the trees celebrate the season in breathtaking fashion
before shedding their foliage as they make way for winter's ice and snow.
I would not want to miss even one season. Each has it's bounties for which
I am grateful.
That first snowfall
can be breathtaking in it's beauty particularly when man has not yet disturbed
the peace which seems to permeate the landscape as the snowflakes
begin to float in the air in fewer numbers and one indulges oneself for
that brief interlude when nature rests and invites you to enjoy the artistry
she has provided for your viewing pleasure. No photograph or artwork can
ever really do her justice. The feeling of calm which surrounds you is
quite profound as you take in her awesome display.
Winter is a season for quiet reflection
and tranquility. The snowflakes of that first beautiful snowfall are like
white feathers fluttering from a gray sky silently providing a panorama
of truly quiet beauty allowing the imagination to weave the commonplace
into something pristine and new. For that brief time it's an unsullied
landscape before you.
Adult perspective
of course. The children cannot wait to get out there and leave their imprint,
whether it be a snowman to construct, a fort to be built, a sled to try
out, or simply to make snow angels in the blanket of snow provided. Even
that first major shoveling effort of the winter season becomes a community
gathering as neighbours all appear with shovels in hand calling out to
one another in greeting as they set about the task of clearing driveways
and walkways in unison and with an exuberance only winter's first big snowfall
seems to arouse.
Yes, winter can be
cruel at times but it has it's blessings as well. It's all in the perspective
of the individual. Do we see only the inconveniences or do we also see
another of nature's gifts as yet one more blessing to be embraced and enjoyed.
The beauty of a winter morning when snow is fresh and clean and
everything is clothed in white is an awesome sight to behold.
In this world today with all its worry
and stress we need to take notice of the things which are food for the
soul. Whether it be flowers in springtime, the summer sunshine, the glory
of autumn's colours, or winter's silent beauty. Each is a gift we all too
often take for granted. Please do yourself a favour.
Make the time to savour the special moments.
