| Another war, another time. But John Lennon's
words ring as true today as they did so many years ago. Sadly, we still
haven't heeded his advice. Some called him a fool, some said he was
a hopeless romantic, but his words and his music today still reverberate
with the exact same clarity and resonance as they did the very
first time we heard them.
How do we possibly justify the maiming
and killing of innocent children ? How does this make us safer ? To wage
war on an entire society because of a fanatical element within its ranks
is to ignite a hatred toward us beyond imagining. Just look at the results
of an attack on America which killed innocent people. We have been blinded
by the need for retribution so completely that the majority have even bought
the theory that this is a just war. It is not. No war is justified where
innocent children are slaughtered and maimed. Not ever. Certainly not to
those who value human life or the innocent among us.
And yes, I say us. We are all children
of God regardless of our religious or political beliefs or where in this
world we are domiciled. To consider answering violence with lawless violence
in return, which shows no mercy to those who are blameless and to
do so in defiance of the world community, is to join the ranks of those
whom we would seek to destroy.
Democracy has always professed belief in
the Rule of Law ... until now. Now, we invade a country which has not invaded
our shores, and which had no part in the attack we seek to address,
simply because those in control tell us we should do so. We do not question
their motives. We acquiesce like sheep because to oppose them is to
be labelled disloyal or to be considered unfriendly to an ally and friend.
The 'evil' which is so often cited by the powers that be as the target
is not only in foreign lands. It also resides in the hearts of those among
us who chose to take the Free World to the brink of annihilation
with a stubborn resolve that only they know what is best for our
world. They are as dangerous as any terrorist we may face and we must wake
up to this fact before it is too late for all of us. Freedom must not have
been the ultimate casualty of 9/11. We simply can not allow this to happen
! If we do so the terrorists have won and we blaspheme the memory of every
single soul who perished in the attacks on America.
We do not have the right to force democracy
on another nation. Nor will we succeed in doing so. What kind of
democracy is it if force must be used to systematically
ignore the wishes of the people of a nation as we demand their acquiescence
to our political beliefs?
"No man is good enough
to govern another man without that other's consent."
- Abraham Lincoln
The misery we have inflicted on another
sovereign nation in the name of the Free World , and are continuing to
inflict, is inexcusable. We hear how brave soldiers have died or have been
wounded in this cause and wonder how these youngsters will face tomorrow
... if they have a tomorrow ... and how they will live with
the memories of the fear and loathing they encountered
while defending their country. Their Commander in Chief , who has
no personal experience of active duty in the defence of his country, has
told them they are heroes but I wonder how many of them believe in their
heart of hearts that the fear they see in the eyes of the children
of the land they have invaded makes them heroic? They are doing as
they were taught ... obeying orders ... and they are most assuredly not
to blame .
The blame belongs squarely on the
doorstep of those who chose this course of action and did so without
sufficiently careful thought and responsible preparation for the after-effects
of their choices. Perhaps they sleep well after seeing the images of the
lifeless or maimed bodies of babies and little children or the terror on
the faces of the little ones who are their victims but I very much
doubt their countrymen do.
War seeks the destruction of those with
whom we disagree rather than attempting to find the best way in which to
coexist with those who are different. Rather than erasing those differences,
or finding common ground on which to agree, war serves only to divide and
breed more of the hatred and bigotry which will eventually destroy
mankind if left unchecked. Every single human being on this planet has
the right to be judged using the 'Rule of Law' not the 'Rule of the
Most Powerful'.
My heart breaks for the children
who lost their parent or parents on 9/11 but it also shatters into minuscule
fragments as I think of the many thousands of children who must face 'liberation'
... even if it kills them ... because it has been decreed by a power
with the might to do anything it damn well pleases. Where do you suppose
those children will look to for friends or allies as they grow older ...
if they do survive the horror ? Most assuredly it will not be to us. We
are creating the generation with which our children and grandchildren will
have to coexist. It will be tragic and reprehensible if future generations
are forced to pay the price for our criminal neglect of what is right and
in the time honoured traditions of our way of life.
The financial well being of those future
generations has already been mortgaged by the decisions of the present
US administration, they surely do not have the right to mortgage their
future freedoms as well. We must defend with every fibre of our beings
the right to live in freedom and safety but we must not throw aside
every principle for which our Free World stands in the mistaken belief
that we will make our world a safer place. To abandon the Rule of Law
and International Co-operation and to continue on this path of violence
and warfare is to condemn those innocent future generations to annihilation.
We are perilously close to the point
of no return.
I devoutly pray wiser heads prevail, before
it is too late for everyone on this tired old planet of ours, as those
with the power to stop this madness prepare to once again elect a
Leader of the Free World. Now, more than at any time I can recall in my
lifetime, failure to honour that commitment by exercising the precious
right to vote would be truly unconscionable.
"The
only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
- Edmund Burke (1729-1797)
