Well, things have finally improved
around here and it's darn well about time. I have been trying to
get Mom to realize that I needed my own work space ever since we started
this web site. I've been the site foreman around here for almost
four years now and finally she broke down and gave me my own desk !! I
was beginning to think she would never get the message. I kept messing
up her desk hoping she would get sick of it and give me my own but
didn't seem to be getting through to her at all. Guess I was
wrong 'cause she finally came through!
Boy, when she does something she
does it right too.. I have a better spot than she does .. closer to the
windows and right in the middle of all the plants. Sure does make
a nice office. Now ... if the girls would just leave me alone when I'm
tryin' to work. For two cute chicks they can sure be a complete pain in
the tail feathers at times. They really don't seem to understand that Mom
wouldn't be able to keep this web site interesting if it weren't
for me. Where do they think she gets all her ideas ? Weeell... maybe not
all of them. I can't take the credit for the ones where she gets really
serious. They are her thing ... not mine. Me ... I'm always
looking for the bright side and think we all need a lot more
fun in our lives.
Penny and Pixie are really super
gals but they don't take this web site stuff anywhere near seriously enough.
It really bugs them that I like to spend time at my desk working
on new ideas for a couple of hours each day. Like right now... they
are out in the kitchen and have been calling me for about half an hour
now to come see the goodies they have found. ( do they EVER think of anything
but food ????) Darn it ! I suppose I do have to go check on them
and make sure they aren't getting into anything that will hurt them. Usually
I try to be there when they go exploring because they don't know their
way around like I do and I can steer them away from places they shouldn't
go . Like the stove. I just bet it never enters their heads that it might
be hot or that the yummy looking fruit on the counter
isn't for eating. For some dumb reason Mom thinks it makes a nice decoration.
Sheesh !! You would think she would know by now that little
girl-type birds wouldn't know the difference !
Those two will drive me crazy yet !
You are not going to believe where I found them the other day. They had
been really quiet for so long that I just knew they were up to no
good and so I decided to go and find them. I looked everywhere I could
think of and there wasn't a sign of them. Except for the occasional birdie
marking which is a part of the scenery whenever a bird is allowed
to fly free. ( Mom is really pretty good about that and even though she's
a clean freak she doesn't say a word or get angry... just goes and
gets a paper towel and quietly removes the evidence.)
I spent ages flying around all
the likely places.. no sign anywhere. And not a peep to indicate where
they were. I just knew they had to be up to no good. Those two have
trouble being quiet even when they are sleeping ... if they could be that
quiet ... it spelled trouble ... BIGTIME! And then totally by accident
I spotted them. I hadn't even thought of looking in Dad's Office. That
part of the house is strictly off limits and we all know it! He has all
his musical stuff in there and there are wires all over the place and usually
his desk is covered with papers as well. He sure wouldn't be thrilled to
have bird droppings all over his paperwork ! But those two girls
obviously believe in living dangerously 'cause there they were ...
bold as brass and making themselves totally at home all over Dad's stuff
!!!!!
Those girls sure do know how to get my attention
! Both of them built nests at the very same time a few weeks ago
and they both laid four eggs which meant that I had a lot of responsibilities
to look after, like feeding the girls and sitting in the nests when
they wanted to get out for exercise, or to take a bath, or do the other
things which they had to do. I knew the eggs were not going to hatch
because the girls still don't realize that there is more to hatching eggs
than laying them and keeping them warm and they can't do the whole job
without my help but guess they will just have to learn that for themselves.
Penny and Pixie are both still quite young and that's all part of the lessons
of life I suppose.
Mom felt the same way and she and
Dad waited for them to finish the nesting cycle before they took the nests
and eggs away but while the girls were brooding I did all I could to make
it easier for them. I sure will help them with the greatest of pleasure
when they decide to lay again and maybe then they will have a successful
hatching but while they are resting up after this last effort I need to
catch up with all my other responsibilities so I'm available when they
need me. Having little baby canaries is something I am really looking forward
to even though I know my hands will REALLY be full then !!!
Their timing wasn't great this last
time because I wasn't feeling up to par because of an extra long
molt and wasn't in 'singing' form when they decided to make their
first try at being Mommies. They sure did do a good job of building nests
and were very conscientious about looking after their eggs and I expect
are going to make very good mommies someday when we all work together at
making sure there are babies in the eggs. Maybe next time. If Penny
has her way that could be rather soon as she is already bugging me to help
her build a new nest.
Come to think of it .. that's sure one
way to keep them out of trouble ! When they are in nesting mode they
stay really close to home and I don't have to chase them all over the house.
They spend almost all of their time either building, laying or brooding
and rarely, if ever, leave the cage.
I really need to have time to work
at my new desk on web site stuff because lately my time has been pretty
well taken up with the girls and I'm way behind. It does take
me longer to do things than it takes Mom because she has 10 fingers and
I only have my beak to use on the keyboard. I tried my feet but they
were even slower than pecking with my beak. I do pretty darn well with
my beak (if I do say so myself) and my typing speed is improving
every day. Thank goodness my mind is so quick and the ideas come
easily ... that makes things a lot easier than they might be if I
didn't have a good imagination and didn't love my work so much.
Mom and I are busy working on about
four new pages so there will be lots of new stuff for our regular
visitors and by helping now so Mom doesn't have to do
all the work alone that will make it a lot easier for me to not feel
guilty and I'll be more able to concentrate on being a Daddy when the girls
have had a rest and are ready to try the Mommy thing again.
Dad would help her but he has his
own site to look after and it's a heck of a lot bigger than Mom's and mine
so it takes a whole lot more work. Particularly as Dad has been sick for
so long and he has a lot of work to do getting his site updated.
He's really particular and fussy about his site and even though I
offered to do stuff for him last year when he was sick he let me know in
no uncertain terms that his site was not to be touched by anyone but himself
so I didn't offer again. Thank goodness he's feeling better now and can
get back to doing some work. I know it really bugged him when
it wasn't being updated regularly.
Here I am yammering away and not
getting my work done but it's so neat having my own desk I guess I got
a bit carried away and forgot that I'm supposed to be helping Mom. I better
get busy or she may decide I don't need my own space after all, and
after waiting all this time to get it I sure don't want to lose this
great desk and it's view! Of course it looks pretty dull and cold
outside right now but just imagine how great it's gonna be once spring
is here! Wonder if Mom would consider moving the cages in here ?
I could keep an eye on the girls easier that way too. Hmmmmm... maybe
I better start working on her now ... if it takes as long to get
her to do that as it did to get her to give me my own desk it might
be winter again before she even considers it ! Yep. I 'm gonna start working
on her right away ... and the best way to start is to get busy
and do what I'm here to do so she is in a really good mood when I start
trying to butter her up. If I work it right she will think the idea was
all hers and Mom always likes to think she is the one who comes up with
the ideas. ( I let her think that 'cause it keeps her happy and I really
do like to do that.)
Oh! btw.. if you would like to see
more of the girls and me .. before you leave check out the Nook Index...
there's lots of pictures and stuff there. I'll try to get around to updating
that section again too before I get too busy with the job of being
a good husband and father, hopefully with more luck this time.
