Time is a companion that goes with us on our
journey through life. It reminds us to cherish each moment, because it
will never come again. If only we were always wise enough to recognize
that what we leave behind is not as important as how we have lived. Or
that once past those moments can never be recalled or mistakes erased and
hurts undone.
Unfortunately all too often that wisdom
only comes when much of our time has already passed. If only that awareness
came at an early age how much more fulfilling our lives would be. Unfortunately
life doesn't work that way. Awareness comes only from living. As children,
time seems to pass ever so slowly. When will I be old enough to go to school
? When will I be old enough to date ? When will I be old enough to drive
? As the years pass time seems to begin to move more quickly. When we are
16 we can't wait to be 21 but as we reach that milestone time seems to
speed up without our even being aware of that fact.
When we have children of our own
we would like to keep them safe and within our care as long as we can but
before we know it they are leaving us to assume the responsibilities of
adulthood on their own. This is the time when we wish we could bring time
to a halt. Our babies cannot possibly be grown ! We still have so much
to teach them about life and they need our protection just a little while
longer. Unfortunately things don't work that way. They are as impatient
as we were to get on with their lives and we have to accept that and trust
we have given them a base to work from which will serve them well.
After all we are only charged with preparing them for life, we don't own
our children, they are ours for only a short time. If we are very lucky
and have done our job well they will always come home when they need a
hug or a pat on the back, but they now have lives of their own of which
we share only a small part. We will always have our memories of those years
when they were ours, and hopefully, if we have not made too many mistakes,
few regrets.
And now, time seems to be racing as we
approach the half century mark. I cannot possibly be 50 ! Where has the
time gone ? There were so many things I planned on doing, so many trips
I planned on taking, so many new places to see and things to do, but the
time never seemed right and now isn't a good time either as I'm too busy
and can't get away. Just when is it a good time ? When do we learn that
time won't wait for us to find a convenient time .. only when it's too
late ? When do we realize that time is not the friend we assumed it was
and actually make time do our bidding for a change? For it is still within
our power to do so, it simply takes recognizing that and not waiting until
you are in your 70's as I am and your enthusiasm for new experiences is
beginning to wane.
Now is when we want time to really slow
down. We aren't anywhere near ready to see this journey in time come to
an end. We have so much living still to do ! Why, we don't feel anything
like a senior citizen. We still think as we did in our twenties. How can
this be ? Where has the time gone ? How did I get to be this age so quickly
? There are so many things I haven't done yet. I need more time to make
amends to those I have hurt, more time to love those I care for so much,
more time to fix all those mistakes I made along the way to here. Time.
Our nemesis at times and yet we take it so very much for granted.
Make time work for you, not against you.
Live every moment of every day to the fullest. Starting now.
Have you ever risen early, climbed a hill,
and watched God make a morning ? The dull gray gives way as the sun pushes
it's way toward the horizon as the tints and hues of every colour begin
to blend into one perfect light as the full sun suddenly bursts into view.
And the feeling which engulfs you is overwhelming. You haven't taken the
time ? Do it.
Troubles and worries ? Remember,
the greenest grass is always found wherever the most rain falls. We all
face what seem like insurmountable problems at times. But here, time is
our friend. This too shall pass. Day dawns after night, showers replace
a drought, and spring and summer follow winter. It is easier to sing your
worries away than to reason them away. Why not sing in the morning ? Think
of the birds ... they are the first to sing each day and they have fewer
worries than anything else in creation. And don't forget to sing in the
evening which is what the robins do when they have finished their
daily work.
You know, the eagle that soars at
great altitudes doesn't worry about how it will cross a river.
Take my advice, it comes with no restrictions,
make the time to enjoy life while you still have time on your side.
"Lost ... somewhere
between sunrise and sunset,
sixty golden minutes,
each set with sixty diamond seconds.
There's no reward
for their return for they are lost forever."
