From the time I was only a child and
the Second World War finally came to an end after so many long years, and
so many lost lives, Canada has positioned itself as a peace keeping nation
whose goal was to aid those in need of assistance where ever and whenever
the need arose. While others took lives, we tried to save them. It was
an honourable endeavour and one which garnered respect around the world.
Canada was known to be a nation which cared. And Canadians were justifiably
proud of our beautiful country and its willingness to be there when needed
... any place, and any time.
No question there have been necessary
changes in recent years as the threat of terrorism has become a reality
we now must all face. In no small measure much of the danger has been heightened
by the decisions made by the leaders of other countries which chose
to retaliate and seek revenge rather than to unite all nations as
one against this deadly enemy. To those leaders diplomacy and friendly
relations appears to be an archaic custom they don't embrace. We wept with
our friends when attacked, we begged them to not react hastily but to exercise
prudent judgment in addressing this deadly foe. They listened to no one.
Their leadership wanted and got a war where the toll of young men and women's
lives is still climbing .. and with no end in sight. Yes, they gave lip
service to seeking out the perpetrators of the deadly assault of
9/11 and the nations of the world united in supporting this effort but
their determination to hunt down the guilty only lasted until they had
everything in place for the war they sought.
They left the front line of the battle
with the real enemy to others as they invaded a country which represented
no imminent threat to any of us and where the military and civilian death
toll is staggering and where there is no end in sight other than catastrophe.
And against the counsel and support of most other nations on this planet.
And now we see Canadians dying for the lack of foresight by those leaders
who began this carnage with lies and deliberate subterfuge, thanks to a
Prime Minister who seeks to be a clone of the leader whose judgment and
integrity is now so much in question not only around the world but among
his own people.
That leader will answer to his people
in time, if not now. He and his kind are not indicative of the historic
values and principles of their people. But will our Prime Minister
? He seeks to build an image as a world leader but he is doing so on the
backs of our young men and women he sends to die. His ego may be astronomical
in size but his stature is shrinking by the day with any who believe Canada's
role in the world should not be that of a war - like nation but a
much more worthy one .. a humanitarian nation which cares for the needy
and welcomes the peoples of all nations, all races and creeds, to our shores.
Our Prime Minister has chosen his course.
Have we ? Have we so lost sight of our values and standards that we now
choose to take lives rather than save them ? It isn't just
enemies who die in warfare. It is also innocent women and children and
the elderly. Written off as collateral damage. The youth of a nation are
sacrificed as they fight the battles for those sitting in their comfy
chairs in their plush offices, far removed from any possible danger to
themselves, who have chosen to send them to die. How can we possibly accept
this and still believe Canada is a humane and caring country ? How can
we possibly aid and support Stephen Harper in his campaign to become an
accomplice in George Bush's criminal folly ?
Even Bush's people now see how wrong
his policies have been and how much harm he has done to their country
and to the entire world during his tenure in office. The numbers who now
represent our enemies have multiplied beyond comprehension as a direct
result of his errors of judgment. We now are truly despised by millions,
if not billions around the world. I find it utterly impossible to believe
that Canadians .. who have seen Bush for what he is all these years ...
now would choose to support his eager sycophant because of a few tax breaks
or transitory political promises and discard everything for which
our country has stood all these years. Surely we are better than that !
I know our country deserves better. And so do our military personnel. Their
bravery is unquestioned. They have done as they were asked. But .. is Stephen
Harper's ego satisfaction worth the price we are now paying and which we
shall pay in the future?
No longer are we considered a peaceful
nation. We are now seen as nothing more than an appendage of the war mongering
leader we have questioned and castigated for what he was doing to his country
and the world. We have become his henchmen in the eyes of much of the world.
And our Prime Minister preens on the world stage .. proud of this perception.
Harper wears the mantle of Leader
of the Conservative Party. He is truly a wolf in sheep's clothing. He is
no Conservative as we know them to be... he and his close advisors are
neo con to the core. What is next ? Turning us against one another as his
mentor has done to his people ? Dividing our nation irreparably for
his personal political gain ? Encouraging hate and division in a country
which has always prided itself on its equality for every citizen of this
wondrous vast land we call home ? Surely we as Canadians will not allow
this to continue until it is too late. The neo con mentality may have crossed
the border but surely it has not yet invaded the minds of the majority
of Canadians. It is insidious. It didn't take hold in our neighbour's
land overnight. It was a long, well planned, and orchestrated campaign
which took time to come to fruition. We have witnessed the results of the
success of that campaign. Are we so blind that we will allow it to take
hold here as well until it reaches the plateau it reached with our neighbours
? I pray that God grants the wisdom to Canadians so they will assure this
is not so. Regardless of political bent we are first and foremost ... Canadians.
Never has it been so imperative that we recognize this fact.
I expect my words will offend many readers.
I assure you that is not my intent. However,I love our country and
what it has stood for throughout my lifetime, far too much to remain silent
or worry about political sensibilities. We are in danger of changing forever
the character of our nation. This goes way beyond any political affiliation
or dogma. Unless we are willing to listen to one another and respectfully
consider the opinions of others we have indeed been defeated and Canada
and Canadians are no better than Harper and Bush would have us be.
"Our lives begin to end the day we become
silent about things that matter."
- Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr.
Wake up my fellow Canadians. For
the sake of our children and their children we cannot allow this to happen.
The enemy is indeed within our borders. And it isn't foreign in nature.
God help us all ... it is homegrown.
Is it too late to stop it? Only you have
the answers.
